Hinge Lunatic

Roughly a week ago the left hinge of my Thinkpad T41 broke.  This was the horizontal metal below the vertical rotating portion, where it attaches to the frame of the laptop.  I learned some important lessons from this.

  • Do not use superglue to attempt to glue metal together.  It doesn't work.
  • "Cold weld" steel epoxy might work, if you didn't screw it up by first coating all surfaces with superglue.
  • Normally you can't get steel epoxy off after a failed attempt, except if you have a thin layer of superglue coating all surfaces below it...
  • This steel epoxy stuff is pretty cool.  I wish I learned about it sooner.
  • Fussing with broken hardware is a huge waste of time.
So tonight I am attempting again to glue the hinge back together with J-B Weld.  This time however, I am hoping the cleaned and exposed metal will create a strong bond.

UPDATE!
18 hours later, my hinge seems to be solid again.  Let's see if this lasts...

Dude, here. The part is 91P8388 for the 14.1 inch, 13R2918 for the 15.0 inch. This page should be useful. You might have to call them to buy the part, though.
